We awoke in the Tetons and immediately noted how cold it gets overnight at this altitude, even in July.
We had a quick breakfast from the cooler, then headed into Yellowstone National Park. First stop, Old Faithful!
We walked the upper, mid and lower geyser basins, taking in the unusual sights (and smells).
Despite the fact that Yellowstone is an enormous park, there are only two places where people are allowed to swim. Since it was a hot day, we decided to check out Firehole Canyon, a spot where the river is both slow enough to safely swim and fast enough to offer a bit of a thrill. Plus the waters arm warmed naturally by nearby thermal activity – bonus!
Following our swim, we had just enough time to fit in another thermal feature…mud pots! Here are some shots from the Artist's Paint Pots.
We were too exhausted to cook, so we splurged and had burgers and fries at the Canyon Village Soda Fountain.
We were thrilled to discover that our cabin, which we expected to be bare bones, was quite plush by 1960 standards…the year they appear to have been built. We enjoyed hot showers and snuggled onto the one bed to watch a show on the laptop. What an excellent day!

great pictures – the colors seem more vivid than I remember. Was that one pool Emerald Pool? Did the boys enjoy the sulphur smells? Did you go over the Beartooth Highway to get to Billings? Lots of love, Mom

Loved the pics from Yellwstone. I never realized it was so unusual aside from the geysers that the news programs always shoot. The mud pits remind me of the Le Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.
